A conductor applauded the world over

In this episode of our music series, we present internationally renowned conductor Tugan Sokhiev. A charismatic artist who regularly leads the world’s finest orchestras, Sokhiev will take on a remarkable task at this year’s Dvořák Prague Festival. He will lead the legendary Vienna Philharmonic in a concert highlighting violinist Hilary Hahn that promises a memorable musical experience.‍

Tugan Sokhiev was one of the last pupils to study under legendary teacher Ilya Musin at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. During his prolific career he has headed many important musical institutions.‍

‍As music director of the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse from 2008 to 2022, he led numerous international tours. He is known for his deep passion for opera, which has resulted in collaborations with some of the world’s leading singers.‍

‍Tugan Sokhiev is considered one of the very best contemporary conductors and is regularly invited to lead the finest ensembles around the world. He conducts the Berlin and Munich Philharmonic orchestras, Boston Symphony Orchestra and Chicago Symphony Orchestra, as well as the New York Philharmonic. He shines in the world of opera, whether at the Vienna State Opera, Metropolitan Opera in New York or the Zurich Opernhaus. He has received multiple awards for his recordings, including the prestigious Diapason d’Or.‍

‍Tugan Sokhiev will take the conductor’s podium on 12 September, 2026 at 8 pm in the Dvořák Hall of the Rudolfinum in Prague.‍

‍The concert will feature the masterful Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in A Minor by Antonín Dvořák, with the phenomenal American violinist Hilary Hahn as soloist. The orchestra will then perform the exquisite music from the ballet Romeo and Juliet by Sergei Prokofiev in a suite arranged by Sokhiev.
