About the Programme

Twenty-one years ago, Rafał Blechacz won the International Chopin Piano Competition in a manner the prestigious event had not seen for a long time. He swept every first prize, including the audience award. The jury underscored his victory by not awarding a second prize at all – the gap between the then 20-year-old pianist and the rest of the competitors was simply too great – and piano music devotees began picturing him as a successor to the legendary Krystian Zimerman.

More importantly, the Polish pianist has since built on his earlier triumph with a successful career. He has established himself as the foremost interpreter of Chopin in his generation, with a lyrical and colourful style that is perfectly aligned with the composer’s music. The same can be expected of Beethoven’s dreamlike Moonlight Sonata, in which the moonlight seems to radiate directly from the piano through Blechacz’s hands. A Bach-inspired opening recalls the fundamental source of modern European music, whose universality remains open to almost any interpretation. An evening with Rafał Blechacz leaves audiences feeling almost intoxicated and enlightened by rays of eternity.

Rudolfinum, Dvořák Hall

The Rudolfinum is one of the most important Neo-Renaissance edifices in the Czech Republic. In its conception as a multi-purpose cultural centre it was quite unique in Europe at the time of its construction. Based on a joint design by two outstanding Czech architects, Josef Zítek and Josef Schultz, a magnificent building was erected serving for concerts, as a gallery, and as a museum. The grand opening on 7 February 1885 was attended by Crown Prince Rudolph of Austria, in whose honour the structure was named. In 1896 the very first concert of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra took place in the Rudolfinum's main concert hall, under the baton of the composer Antonín Dvořák whose name was later bestowed on the hall.
